This phenomenon happens due to the speed of light needing time as well to travel from one point in space to another. The new map of the Universe established by Johns Hopkins University astronomers by exploiting data collected over two decades by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey allows the user to “travel in time” billions of years into the past.

Brice Ménard, who is the creator of the map and a professor at Johns Hopkins, explained as Phys.org quotes:
Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like.

The Universe is still unimaginably larger than the map can ever show it.
