The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has just warned that the world must be aware of new possible symptoms of monkeypox, the viral disease that keeps spreading across the world. The news comes at about the same time when research indicates that monkeypox might already be mutating at an unexpected and unprecedented rate.
The CDC is also strongly recommending vaccination as a way to prevent the infection with the viral disease known as monkeypox. In order to reach its effectiveness, the vaccine needs to be administered before exposure to the disease itself.
New York City and Washington DC have dozens of monkeypox cases
The situation got out of hand in New York City and Washington DC, where there are too many demands for monkeypox vaccines to handle, according to Fox News. In other words, there aren’t enough vaccines for the viral disease in the two major US cities, where there are dozens of confirmed infections.
Most people affected by monkeypox are gay and bisexual men, so these individuals were mainly targeted for the vaccinations.
However, the CDC reveals that anybody who gets in contact with another person, regardless of their sexual orientation, can be at risk of getting infected with the viral disease.
Dr. John Brooks, who is the chief medical officer for the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention of the CDC, stated as CNN quoted in an article posted last month:
Some groups may have a greater chance of exposure right now, but by no means is the current risk of exposure to monkeypox exclusively to the gay and bisexual community in the US,
Anyone, anyone, can develop [and] spread monkeypox infection, but … many of those affected in the current global outbreak identified as gay and bisexual men.
There are at least 48 cases of infection with monkeypox in New York City and 16 in Washington DC.
Amusingly enough, the CDC even issued guidance for how sexually active people should behave in the monkeypox era.
