According to the latest reports, it seems that micronutrients are offering protection against several serious diseases. Check out the latest reports about this below.
Micronutrients offer high protection for health
As degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are on the rise worldwide, even affecting younger people, forgetfulness and shaky hands are no longer just considered typical signs of aging.
Experts warn that these lapses may be an indication of a more serious problem – a nutritional deficiency that could lead to memory loss and mobility problems.
Recent research has shown that not receiving enough of certain essential vitamins and minerals could significantly increase the risk of developing these neurological conditions.
It is crucial to understand which nutrients are essential for protecting the brain as nutrient deficiency affects over 2 billion people worldwide, while inadequate nutrient intake is pervasive in the U.S. population as per the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
Micronutrients play a crucial role in neurotransmitter production and transmission, which aid the brain in sending and receiving signals.
Nutrient-rich food could potentially have therapeutic value for prevention and may even help those experiencing neurological diseases. This was revealed in a study published in Nutrients.
“The deficiency in individual micronutrients contributes to pathological changes in the development of the nervous system and can lead to the development of ‘nutritional’ neuropathies (nerve damage),” the study authors wrote.
Micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals are essential in small amounts to maintain optimal health, according to Alisa Trairatana, a registered dietitian nutritionist at Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in New York. She added that deficiencies in these nutrients can cause many serious health problems.
Trairatana recommends consuming a variety of nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, cereals, salmon, eggs, beans, meat, and whole grains to ensure adequate intake of these essential micronutrients.
