FDA Approves Controversial Drug For Kids To Delay Diabetes

Diabetes continues to remain a health issue that affects millions of people from all over the planet. In US alone, there are about 2 million people in the US who suffer from Diabetes and type 1 diabetes is the type that we are referring to at the moment.

Type 1 and 2 of diabetes

Type 2 diabetes affects 5% go 10% of people who have diabetes, and this is believed to be caused by an autoimmune reaction during which the body attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that are known as beta cells by mistake.

Beta cells are known for making insulin, so this means that in Type 1 diabetes, your pancreas does not make insulin or it does not make enough in order to keep you healthy.

FDA approves a controversial drug for kids to delay diabetes, according to the latest reports. It’s been just revealed that the FDA approved the first drug that delays the onset of Type 1 diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association called the approval a “historic moment” for those living with the condition.

The author of the article posted by the online publication Children’s Health Defense notes the following:

“I call it absurdity on steroids, as this drug does not treat or prevent Type 1 diabetes. It only delays its onset for about two years.”

It’s been also revealed that the drug’s wholesale cost is $193,900 for a 14-day supply, and it comes with a risk of unknown side effects.

“Type 1 diabetes is a serious condition, but marketing this drug as a savior of sorts is at best misleading and at worst downright dangerous,” the same author notes.

The online publication notes the following:

“Further, environmental factors, including viruses, may trigger the condition. It can occur at any age but is most commonly diagnosed in children and young adults.”
