In August, we have front-row tickets to a spectacular astronomical spectacle. Did you know that the universe will gift us with not one but two supermoons, followed by a blue moon that will only occur once in a person’s lifetime? Even if it may seem like something out of a novel, this is not the first time that we have witnessed such power being put on display.
Read more below, and you’ll find some intriguing information on where and how you may view the two supermoons.
In the month of August, we have two really exciting events planned, so make sure you won’t miss either one of them! On Tuesday, August 1, just as the sun is setting in the southeast, a spectacular supermoon will appear in the sky. The result will be that it will give the impression of being much larger and brighter than it actually is. This is due to the fact that it will be just 222,159 miles (357,530 kilometers) away from Earth, making it the “closest” it has ever been in its whole existence, earning it the name “supermoon.” Prepare your binoculars and telescopes!
Did you know that in 2018, for the first time ever, there were two full supermoons that sparkled in the sky within the same month?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac refers to the full Moon that occurs in the month of August as the “sturgeon moon,” and this name has stuck over the years. This is because, for centuries in the past, the month of August in the Great Lakes was filled to the brim with these types of fish. The first supermoon of this year was visible to us in July of this year. September is the month that is set aside for the conclusion of this series. The two that take place in August will be a sizeable percentage point greater than the others.
Finally, on the evening of August 30, the Moon will enter an intriguing phase, and it’ll be the closest it has ever been to our Terra, with a distance of only 222,043 miles (357,344 kilometers) between the two bodies. This will be one of the closest it has ever been. It is referred to as a “blue moon” when there is a second supermoon that happens throughout the month. This is because it is the third full Moon that occurs during the month.
