Tea and Coffee May Help Reduce the Risk of Stroke and Dementia

Fans of coffee and tea will be thrilled to find out that a 14-year-long study revealed that consuming both drinks can help protect against stroke and dementia. The study was performed by a research team from Tianjin Medical University in China and it involved 400,000 coffee and tea drinkers in the UK, with ages between 50 and 74 years old.

The results of the study showed that drinking coffee or tea on a daily basis could offer protection against stroke and dementia, with the best effects being obtained by consuming both drinks every day.

According to Woman’s World, “study participants who mixed it up and drank two to three cups of coffee along with two to three cups of tea every day had a 32 percent lower risk of stroke, and a 28 percent lower risk of dementia.”

While researchers have previously studied the benefits of tea and coffee separately, this study aimed at analyzing the combination of the two drinks and how the daily intake of both drinks may impact your health.

However, before you rush to pour your fourth coffee of the day, you should be aware that the analysis was based on the participants’ own reports of how much coffee and tea they consumed, which means that the study was not performed in a very strict environment.

While researchers cannot make the claim that drinking more coffee and tea is definitely good for your brain, the study did show that, from the 40,000 people who participated in the study, the ones who drank a combination of tea and coffee every day had fewer chances to suffer a stroke or develop dementia in the following ten years during which they were under supervision,

The research team concluded that moderate consumption of both or either of the two drinks may decrease the risk of stroke and dementia.
