Our planet is in serious danger even though we choose to ignore it. Scientists continue to report new alarming things every day. Four United Nations scientific reports came with some new worrisome information about biodiversity.

According to the scientists, Earth will continue to lose clean water, animals and plants. They analysed four different areas: Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe and Central Asia and Americas. They discovered that each region has major problems.

Losing numerous species

We tend to believe that the effects of pollution will become obvious far in the future, but it appears that we will get to experience them during out lifetime. The reports found out that Asia won’t have fish stocks for commercial fishing by 2048, half of the mammal and bird species in Africa could disappear by 2100. They also found out that there will be 15 percent fewer plants and animals in the Americas by 2050.

We already know that the last northern white rhino in Africa died and there are less tigers, elephants and pangolins every day. However, scientists warn us that numerous other species are in trouble. And humans will be directly affected as well, because biodiversity affects the entire planet.

Scientists also believe that overpopulation is a problem because people get more wealthy and they need even more food, water, energy and land than they did before. Climate change is also an important factor, and man has managed to put the planet in danger with global warming.

Jake Rice co-chaired the report for the Americas as he is Canada’s chief government scientist for fisheries and oceans. He also added that the irresponsible choices that we make are affecting out future: “We keep making choices to borrow from the future to live well today.”
