It has been revealed for a while now that China is creating humanoid robots – the question is why. Check out the latest reports about the matter below.
China and its humanoid robots
As the population ages and more people live alone, companion robots are becoming a potential solution for loneliness. In China, where over 92 million adults live alone, accounting for more than 6% of the population, there is a high demand for companionship.
At the World Robot Conference 2023 in Beijing, Li Boyang, CEO of Ex Robots, emphasized the importance of companion robots for the elderly.
His company aims to create humanoid robots with artificial intelligence and advanced materials like silicon-based artificial skin, capable of performing tasks and simulating human movements, facial expressions, and gestures. These features will make them more engaging and intuitive when interacting with people.
Companion robots are not only for the elderly but also for a significant portion of the younger generation that struggles with loneliness and mental health problems.
In China, over 20 million young adults aged between 20 and 39 live alone due to reasons ranging from the financial burden of starting a family to the desire for independence amid societal pressures.
Given the Chinese government’s efforts to curb population decline, companion robots may become more prevalent, providing companionship and assistance with daily tasks, which could influence societal attitudes towards family formation.
Although companion robots have the potential to address social isolation, there are still concerns about their cost, availability, and safety.
As humanoid robots continue to advance, their role in reshaping societal dynamics and addressing the challenges of an aging and isolated population is a subject of both fascination and careful consideration.
The intersection of technology, societal needs, and the human desire for connection holds the key to a future where robots play an increasingly integral part in our social fabric.
