COVID-19 Hospitalizations Are Dropping Significantly in the US

The COVID-19 disease is usually causing mild symptoms, but it can actually trigger severe illness and even death for many patients. Unfortunately, the US represents a great example, as over 508,000 patients died in the country because of the ongoing pandemic.

Although the US is the hardest-hit country by he SARS-CoV-2 virus, the hospitalizations are reaching an unprecedented low level since November, according to CNN. There’s no wonder why, as federal officials are preparing to push large shipments of vaccines to states for the next few days.

‘Only’ around 59,000 COVID patients in US hospitals

There were about 59,000 COVID patients in the US hospitals on Friday, a number that pales by comparison with the peak of over 132,470 souls on January 6, as The COVID Tracking Project reveals. Friday’s number of hospitalizations represents the first under 60,000 since November 9.

Dr. Megan Ranney, who’s an emergency medicine physician with Brown University from Rhode Island, declared:

This is why we’re telling people to not stop masking, not stop avoiding indoor social gatherings quite yet, because we don’t really know what’s going to happen with this variant,

The doctor added:

And we saw what happened last winter when we didn’t take Covid seriously enough.

One of the reasons for the major decline in COVID hospitalizations is represented by the ongoing vaccination campaign. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals through federal data that over 57 million COVID vaccine doses were administered in the US, which means around 12.4% of the whole country’s population.

As for the rest of the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has infected a total of over 111 million people and killed more than 2.4 million of them (about 3%). Luckily enough, over 86 million patients were recovered. The most affected countries besides the US are India, Brazil, Russia, the UK, France, Spain, Italy, and so on.
