Almost 40% of All United States Cancers are Connected to Obesity

Health officials from the United States have linked 40 % of all cancers to people being overweight. It seems that over 630,000 cancers are associated with this issue and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are focusing on preventing this problem.

But it’s difficult to do so when 71% of the American population is overweight or obese and it is causing a lot of concern.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s director Brenda Fitzgerald has stated that the majority of American adult weight more than it is recommended and that the overweight or obese people are at a higher risk of getting a range of cancers.

Prevent Getting Cancers by Keeping Your Weight Under Control

In order to prevent getting cancer, people should focus on having a healthy weight. People who carry too much weight boost the odds of getting 13 types of tumors such as cancers of thyroid, gallbladder, stomach, esophagus, liver, postmenopausal breast, kidney, pancreas, uterus, rectum and colon.

Since 1990 the new types of cancers have dropped but the weight-related cancers have grown and are still growing.

The only cancer determined by weight that dropped from 2005 to 2014 by 23% is the Colorectal cancer, due to screening. But the other cancers have risen in this period with 7%.

The 630,000 cancers that were diagnosed in 2014 and that occurred because of weight issues, occurred in cases where the patients were older, with a range of 50 – 74 years old. Out of those cases, there were 55% women with weight-associated cancers and only 24% men.

In America, the CDC has gathered data and it showed that 32.8% Americans are overweight and 37.9% are obese. Overweight people have a body mass index that is between 25-29.9 kg/m2 and obese people get to a body mass index of 30 or more. In order to calculate a body mass index, you must know a person’s weight and divide by the square of his/her height.
