4 Reasons You Should Always Schedule Outdoor Exercise Into Your Routine

Indoor exercises like the treadmill, jump rope and stationary bike are fine, but they can get repetitive. Come rain or shine, the outdoors offers you a variety of fun activities that will thrill and challenge you. There are plenty of reasons to embrace nature as your gym—here are a few:

1. It’s free. Most of us pay a monthly fee for our health club memberships. For some, this fee is worth it because it encourages fitness. But for others, the cost can be prohibitive. If your budget doesn’t allow for a monthly gym membership, but you still want to exercise regularly, head for the great outdoors instead! The only cost is whatever you spend on the equipment you use (see next point). So get out there and let Mother Nature be your personal trainer!

2. You can do it anytime. If you have a busy schedule and limited free time, outdoor workouts may be the way to go. With no commute time involved, outdoor exercises are almost always convenient options – just grab your gear and go! Indoor gyms sometimes have long lines of people waiting to use specific machines at set times or hours, so outdoor exercises offer another alternative when you need one.

3. Enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. When you’re exercising outside, you’ll be able to breathe in fresh air, which can help keep your lungs clear and healthy. It will also help boost your mood if you’re feeling a little down or stressed out. Sunshine can help improve your mood as well since it helps increase serotonin levels in the brain.

4. The outdoors has been shown to have a positive effect on one’s mental health, especially among people suffering from depression. Being surrounded by nature is often enough to help eliminate stress from one’s life. Exercise that is done outdoors also leaves you feeling energized and happy. That’s because the outdoors is known to boost endorphin levels. Outdoor exercise has also been shown to increase self-esteem and decrease feelings of loneliness.
