Green Tea Declares War to the American Diet

The great health benefits of the green tea have been known for thousands of years. It is a tea very rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Some people drink green tea as an alternative for coffee or when they want to lose weight.

The Western/American diet

Unfortunately, the western diet is pretty harmful, with negative health effects such as type 2 diabetes, poor brain function and weight gaining. The western diet is also called by many the American diet which consists of processed meats, plenty of saturated fats, refined sugars and carbohydrates and little amounts of fruits and vegetables.

Green Tea fights the effects of unhealthy food habits

A new study published in The FASEB Journal proves that green tea attacks the negative health effects of the western diet. The researchers from the Northwest A&F University from the College of Food Science and Engineering department, in Yangling, China, have discovered that a compound found in green tea: the epigallocatechin gallate (EGG) was able to reduce the start of insulin resistance, memory impairments and obesity. They used mice and gave them a high-fat and high-fructose died (HFFD). The gallated catchin compound found in the green tea helps reduce the blood sugar levels and reduce blood glucose levels.

About the study

To determine the effects of the EGCG compound, researchers separated young mice into three groups: mice fed with HFFD mice fed with both HFFD and 2 g of EGCG per liter of water and a group of mice with a standard diet. Several parameters were tested, including the water maze memory test. According to the study, the mice eating HFFD and EGCG were the ones less likely to gain weight and develop insulin resistance. The use of the EGCG helped reduce the effects of the Western/American diet.
