The probiotic microbes altered the gene expression of fat metabolism, leading to an increase in proteins responsible for fat breakdown, and a decrease in those involved in synthesizing triglycerides, which are the most common types of fat in the body.

According to the researchers, this metabolic shift resulted in reduced fat accumulation in the worms.

These findings suggest that drinking kombucha may reduce body fat without reducing food intake.

“These findings suggest that the microbes in Kombucha Tea trigger a ‘fasting-like’ state in the host even in the presence of sufficient nutrients,” the study authors noted in a press release.
